Fighting for Those Who Have Defended Our Freedom
Providing high-quality long term healthcare for America’s heroes, Veterans Homes have exemplified the honorable military traditions of this nation for nearly a century and a half-since their establishment after the Civil War. Today the rich heritage of the armed forces “taking care of its own” continues at the 130 Homes that serve 32,000 elderly and infirm veterans around the country.
These Veterans Homes enjoy a unique community involvement that results in a “value added” living environment and improved quality of life for every resident. In addition to sharing the common bond of patriotism and military service with one another, the residents also enjoy dedicated volunteers from local veteran organizations and active-duty military units who visit the Homes frequently. With these special visitors, residents can share stories of service, enjoy Home activities, and participate in events and outings.
The very presence of these veterans and uniformed soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines brings a spark of excitement, a source of strength and a boost in morale to an incapacitated resident-critical tools for combating the feelings of loneliness and despair that accompany aging. It also reminds these veteran residents that their years of service have not been forgotten.
For these reasons and more, the Veterans Homes system is a unique national treasure and a symbol of pride for members of the armed forces – past, present and future.
